Partial systems are also common, where a seller sells some combination of the main parts (most commonly rig + reserve). Harness fit is one of the most important aspects when buying a used rig. There is some leeway but finding a container that fits you well has the largest impact on how much you will be able to enjoy your new rig. You can check our harness sizing guide for in-depth information on how to verify fit and also consult your rigger or instructor for guidance. If you have the chance, it is best to try on the rig in person.
Containers can only hold a specific range of Main and Reserve Canopy sizes. Therefore many people sell the whole system or multiple parts (e.g. Container + Reserve) together when upgrading to a new rig. In many cases buying it together will get you a better deal as it is easier for the seller than selling each part individually. You can of course also buy the separate parts or a semi-complete system and the missing parts separately.
Containers fit canopies within a specific volume range. Our container sizing guide shows which canopies fit which containers of popular manufacturers so you can quickly check if a system suits the canopy you are jumping. If your canopy is not listed, ask your rigger, often other canopies that pack similarly large fit as well.
The most important aspect is to find the right gear. Make sure the canopy model and size are suitable for your skill level and that the condition is right. If you can, buy a system where the container fits canopies up to the size you are currently jumping. Containers usually hold a range of approximately 40 sqft., so you have room to downsize and don’t have to buy everything new again.
When to buy your own gear is a difficult question and also depends on your options for renting. Generally speaking it often makes sense to wait until you have downsized to a 170 or 190 sqft canopy as larger sizes are more difficult to sell later.

This is a common source of confusion. Technically “rig” and “container” mean the same thing, namely the “backpack” where your parachutes are packed when you jump. Nevertheless, many jumpers use the term “rig” interchangeably with the complete system (Container, Main Parachute, Reserve, and AAD) so don’t let yourself be confused.
