Main Parachute Categories

Depending on use case, experience, design, and fabric, main canopies can be broadly categorised.

1. Student / Beginner

Canopies built for students, beginners, and skydivers just wanting a relaxed ride to the ground are usually larger and designed to be less aggressive. They usually have a square shape and lower aspect ratio which leads to more forgiving openings and flight characteristics. Popular models are the Air from JYRO or the Navigator from PD.

2. Wingsuit

Wingsuit flying introduces additional complexities, especially for opening. Wingsuiters are still in forward flight when opening, the arms are restricted, and the additional fabric means any imbalance weighs more and the pilot chute has a higher likelihood of not catching wind immediately. Linetwists are much more common in wingsuiting and athletes therefore generally choose to use more docile canopies with better opening characteristics. Although many canopies can be used for wingsuiting, specific canopies have been developed for wingsuiting. They commonly have 7 instead of 9 cells, a flatter trim and fabric with higher porosity. Common models are the Kraken from JYRO, Horizon from PD, WinX from Atair or the Epicene Pro 2 and Omicron from Squirrel.

3. Intermediate

Canopies made for freshly-licensed skydivers to people looking to get into high performance canopy flight when loaded heavier. These are usually the first type of canopy bought by a skydiver. They often feature semi-elliptical shapes and aspects of high performance canopies while still being easy to fly. In larger sizes they are suitable for less experienced skydivers and when loaded heavier many are suitable to start doing turns on landing and getting into swooping. Popular models are the Safire 3 from JYRO, the Sabre 2 and Sabre 3 from PD, and the Pilot from Aerodyne.

4. Transition

Fully elliptical, non-crossbraced canopies built for canopy piloting. They are for experienced jumpers that are doing high-performance canopy piloting aiming to eventually fly cross-braced canopies. The fully elliptical shape, higher aspect ratio and steeper trim leads to more sensitivity and performance but also less room for error. Common models are the Crossfire 3 from JYRO or the Katana from PD.

5. High Performance

High performance cross-braced canopies built for experienced canopy pilots. Cross-braces allow for more stiffness in the wing and higher performance. Many of these “entry-level” crossbraced canopies feature 7 cells which are divided by crossbraces and lower aspect ratio compared to hyper performance competition canopies. Popular models are the JFX2 by JYRO, the Velocity and Comp Velocity by PD, or the Gangster by Fluid Wings.

6. Hyper Performance / Competition

Top-tier cross-braced canopies for professional canopy pilots and competition. They have higher aspect ratios, a more elliptical shape, and 9 cells compared to the entry-level cross-braced canopies. The most high performing wings amongst hyper performance canopies include the Petra from JYRO and the Peregrine from PD.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are multiple things to take into consideration. Specifically when buying a used main canopy, the condition of the fabric and lines are important.

Regarding the fabric, the higher the porosity (the less airtight the fabric is) the lower the performance as air is going through the fabric. Most common current main canopies are made of zero porosity (ZP) fabric which has silicone coating to make it more air tight. With age and usage this coating wears off and the performance diminishes. This especially happens when the canopy was exposed to sun, salty air, sand or other influences that wear it down. So check the condition of the fabric and find out where it was jumped and packed.

Furthermore, check the condition of the crossports (the holes in the ribs between the cells) for fraying. They tend to fray out over time and wear and if this fraying is bad it could lead to fundamental damage on the ribs and be very costly to fix.

Lastly, and very importantly, figure out the state of the lines. Depending on what material the line is made out of (Spectra, Vectran, HMA, Dacron) they last differently long but generally lines need replacement no later than after 400 jumps. A new lineset can easily set you back 700 bucks. Therefore if you have two identical canopies but one has 200 jumps more on the lineset you can directly deduct approximately 350 bucks from the value.

Your wingloading (Exit Weight / Canopy Size) is an important determinant for how aggressively your canopy performs. Not all canopies are recommended for all wingloadings according to the manufacturer. For example a high performance canopy should not be jumped with a very low wingloading as it is not designed for it. However, keep in mind that the wingloading is by far not the only important consideration so just use it to explore.

As containers are built to fit a certain range of canopy sizes your container size determines which volume sizes of canopies you can pack. Multiple aspects determine the pack volume of a canopy. (1) the size of the canopy as a larger canopy has more fabric and packs higher of course, (2) the number of cells because more cells also mean more lines and more ribs which increase pack volume, (3) cross-bracing as this means more fabric, (4) material because different materials pack differently large.

Many manufacturers produce low-pack-volume (LPV) canopies so that you can pack a larger canopy in the same container size. They are usually made out of special LPV material and often feature 7 instead of 9 cells (especially for wingsuit canopies). For example in a Vector V310 you can fit a Sabre 3 up to 150 sqft (which is a standard fitting canopy) but also an Omicron 190 (which is a LPV wingsuit canopy).
